recharged.

March 30, 2009

Yesterday at church I did something that, when I think about it now, I haven’t done in about 4 years…I sat and watched. Usually if the band is not out leading, I’m either playing or singing with the praise team at church. Yesterday, however, I didn’t play drums or sing with the praise team, I just sat with Ashley and sang with the congregation. It was absolutely awesome. I’ve got to do this more often. I think a few things came out of it:

-I got to listen and appreciate what a great band and praise team our church has. I guess I take it for granted because I’m always up there but they sounded great. And as an added bonus, we just brought on a violin player which added a tremendous touch to the sound!

-I was able to sit and sing/worship with Ashley…unusual for us because of previously mentioned reasons.

-I felt recharged. So many times, when your playing these great worship songs you just “play” them and don’t tune in to the message. The gospel is so timeless. We sang songs that I’ve heard so many times but they spoke to me in different ways because I wasn’t thinking of the set list, the next song transition, we will sell decent tonight, etc. Like Zack has been teaching us in our devotion times, we really need to stop and listen to God more.

Don’t get me wrong, I love playing and being in the lead worship team but I think this is something I need to do more of when I’m home at our church. I have had this conversation a few times with other friends who are on the road in Christian music and have said how we want to just participate sometimes…It felt great to finally do that.
